FDA rejects call to ban BPA from food packaging

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Food and Drug Administration has rejected a petition from environmentalists that would have banned the plastic-hardening chemical bisphenol-A from all food and drink packaging, including plastic bottles and canned food.

The agency said Friday that petitioners did not present compelling scientific evidence to justify new restrictions on the much-debated chemical, commonly known as BPA, though federal scientists continue to study the issue.

The Natural Resources Defense Council's petition was the latest move by public safety advocates to prod regulators into taking action against the chemical, which is found in everything from CDs to canned food to dental sealants.

About 90 percent of Americans have traces of BPA in their bodies, mainly because it leaches out of food and beverage containers.

Some scientists believe exposure to BPA can harm the reproductive and nervous systems, particularly in babies and small children, potentially leading to cancer and other diseases. They point to results from dozens of BPA studies in rodents and other animals.

But FDA reiterated in its response that that those findings cannot be applied to humans. The agency said the studies cited by NRDC were often too small to be conclusive. In other cases they involved researchers injecting BPA into animals, whereas humans ingest the chemical through their diet over longer periods of time. The agency also said that humans metabolize and eliminate BPA much more quickly than rats and other lab animals.

"While evidence from some studies have raised questions as to whether BPA may be associated with a variety of health effects, there remain serious questions about these studies, particularly as they relate to humans," the agency said in its response.

The Natural Resources Defense Council petitioned the FDA in 2008 to ban BPA as a food additive, including all uses in food or beverage packaging. Petitions on various safety issues are routinely filed by advocacy groups, companies and even individuals. When the FDA failed to respond within the required timeframe, the environmental group sued the agency. In December a federal judge ruled that the agency had to respond by the end of March.

"The FDA is out-of-step with scientific and medical research," said Dr. Sarah Janssen, NRDC's senior scientist for public health. "This illustrates the need for a major overhaul of how the government protects us against dangerous chemicals."

FDA officials stressed that their assessment of BPA is ongoing, and they expect to issue another update later this year based on their most recent findings. The agency's last official statement was that there is "some concern" about BPA's effects on infants and young children.

The government is spending $30 million to conduct additional studies on the chemical's impact on humans. Several federal studies published in the last two years suggest that even human embryos retain far less BPA than other animals.

Many companies have already responded to consumer demand by removing BPA from their products. In 2008, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Toys "R'' Us said they began phasing out bottles, sippy cups and other children's items containing BPA. By the end of 2009, the six leading makers of baby bottles in the U.S. went BPA-free. Earlier this month Campbell's Soup said it would begin removing BPA from its most popular soups, though it did not set a time frame.

But the vast majority of canned goods in the U.S. are still sealed with resin that contains BPA to prevent contamination and spoiling. Canned food manufacturers have used the chemicals since the 1950s, and the practice is approved by the FDA. The chemical industry says BPA is the safest, most effective sealant.

Some manufacturers have begun switching to alternatives. Heinz reportedly uses BPA-free coatings for its Nurture baby formula cans, and ConAgra and General Mills say they have switched to alternative sealants for some canned tomatoes.

The federal government has been grappling with the safety of BPA for more than four years. The FDA revised its opinion on BPA in 2010 saying there is "some concern" about the chemical's impact on the brain and reproductive system of infants, babies and young children. Previously the agency said the trace amounts of BPA that leach out of food containers are not dangerous.

While older children and adults quickly eliminate the chemical through their kidneys, newborns and infants can retain it for longer. Scientists pushing for a ban on the chemical argue that BPA mimics the effects of the hormone estrogen, interfering with growth.

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? Some workers in Sweden have found a rather offbeat way to spend their lunch hour. Actually, on-beat is more like it.

Dripping with sweat and awash in disco lights, they dance away to pulsating club music at Lunch Beat, a trend that started in Stockholm and is spreading to other cities in Europe.

Then they go back to work.

"It is absolutely fantastic!" exclaimed Asa Andersson, 33, who broke away from her job at a coffee shop to bust some moves last week. "It is the first time I'm here, I'm totally happy and ecstatic, totally covered in sweat and I'm full of energy. It does not get any better than this."

The first Lunch Beat was held in June 2010 in an underground parking lot in Stockholm. Only 14 people showed up. But they had so much fun they immediately planned another event. Word spread, and now the Swedish capital has monthly Lunch Beats that attract hundreds.

Similar events have been held in at least 10 other Swedish cities and in Finland and Serbia. Portugal's first try will be in Porto next month, organizers said.

The party starts at noon and goes on for one hour. There's no alcohol, which gives it a different ambiance than nighttime clubbing, said Daniel Odelstad, the 31-year-old organizer of Lunch Beat Stockholm.

"People are sober, it's in the middle of the day and it is very short, effective and intensive," he said. "You just have to get in there and dance because the hour ends pretty quickly."

Heeding that advice, nearly 500 people paid 100 kronor ($14) to attend at Kulturhuset, a cultural center in downtown Stockholm.

Anyone can organize a Lunch Beat event as long as they follow some simple rules, Odelstad said.

"The first rule of Lunch Beat is that you have to dance," he said while checking prepaid tickets at the door. "If you don't want to dance during your lunch hour, then you should eat your lunch somewhere else."

The events are not-for-profit, with cover charges being used for rent and sandwiches so dancers don't return to work hungry.

Some first-time visitors were amazed at how quickly typically reserved Swedes burst out of their shells. As the DJ pumped up the base, office clerks mingled with business-suit types, the young mixed it up with the middle-aged and university students danced with everyone.

"It was just like bang, straight in to the disco," said Kristoffer Svenberg, a 34-year-old artist.

But isn't it uncomfortable returning to an office after an hour of dancing? European workers, a tad more relaxed than Americans, say not at all.

Ellen Bengtsson, 29, came to Lunch Beat with more than a dozen people from a government office.

"It's great," she said. "We'll go back sweaty together."

Why Marriage Makes People Happy | Health

Marriage is, for many people, their most important relationship, the source of much happiness, and, for some, even adds extra years to their life. So, what is it about marriage that?s so important to us? And what happens within a marriage to produce happiness and well-being?

?Married people overall do better on virtually every indicator of health and well-being,? says Robin Simon, a sociology professor and researcher at Wake Forest University. ?Even when they get sick, married people are more likely to recover.?

Other researchers have found that marriage?s well-being advantage has narrowed and perhaps even disappeared compared with other types of living arrangements. The prevalence and social acceptance of unmarried couples and people choosing to live alone have risen a lot in recent years. ?Over the last 30 years, the health gap between the married and never-married has narrowed to almost nothing,? says Debra J. Umberson, a sociology professor and researcher at the University of Texas.

?I do believe the gap between marriage and cohabitation is not as wide as people think,? Simon agrees, although she feels marriage still comes out ahead. ?It?s really not as much about marriage as having an intimate partner,? she says. ?In all of my work, marriage is good. Intimacy is good.?

Intimacy, trust, and commitment form one component of the four resources experts cite as giving married people an upward boost in happiness and well-being. The others are:

• The legal rights and advantages of marriage, such as tax and health-plan benefits.
• Social roles that can give husbands and wives a stronger sense of their own identities and also enhance their well-being in other ways. By dividing up all sorts of activities?domestic, family, community, leisure planning, and the like?couples get more done, relieve stress on one another, and can expand the range and amount of outside activities. And while spousal nagging can bring down relationships, it seems to effectively get partners to take better care of their health.
• The social support spouses provide to each other. By bringing their own sets of external relationships into the marriage, they expand the richness and reach of each other?s social connections. This social connectivity, Umberson and other experts stress, is a vital and often under-appreciated source of happiness.

While the link between marriage and well-being has been intensely studied, predicting marital success is difficult. Exactly which people are likely to make successful spouses, and what can they do to increase the odds of being successful and happy in marriage?

Rates of divorce have recently declined, but marriages and other intimate relationships seem to have an underlying survival rate of only 50 to 60 percent, notes Andrew Cherlin, a professor of sociology and public policy at Johns Hopkins University.

?The state of marriage is that it?s going in two directions,? he adds. ?For people with a college degree, marriage is still going strong.? However, Cherlin explains, ?for people with less education, there?s less marriage, more break-ups, more children born out of marriage, and more stress.? Happy marriage outcomes are much less common in such households.

We?re getting married later, which might contribute to successful outcomes. The median age for a man?s first marriage is nearly 27?, and for women, it?s over 25?. Married women are waiting longer to have children, and there is increasing parity in all key metrics between men and women.

Another predictor of successful marriages, Umberson says, is the quality of a couple?s childhood relationship with their parents. ?The kind of relationships you have with your parents growing up are predictive of marital quality in adulthood,? she says. Further, they?re ?predictive of the quality of all relationships in general.?

Finally, there is a chicken-and-egg component to successful marriages. ?People who are married are happier than people who aren?t,? Cherlin says. ?The question is how much of this is cause and how much is effect?? While natural selection surely has an impact here, Cherlin says, ?people who are inherently happy are more likely to get married, but marriage makes them even healthier.?

Another reality of marriage, which social scientists have documented over and over, is that the honeymoon does end, and the amount of happiness produced within a marriage peaks in its early years and commences a steady decline. Forget Henry Fonda and Katherine Hepburn frolicking on a golden pond. ?The decline is probably the greatest in the first few years of marriage,? Umberson says. ?But from the data, there?s never a period when there?s an upturn.?

This reality of marriage, she and others say, may be one of the most important and practical lessons people should keep in mind at all stages of their marriage. ?I think it?s actually useful for couples to know that it?s normal for there to be ups and downs over time in the quality of a relationship,? Umberson explains. ?You just can?t sustain the highs? of that honeymoon period, and expecting otherwise can place enormous strain on the relationship.

People should also pay a lot of attention before they get married to whether they have a mutually supportive relationship, Simon says. ?People should not take this for granted? and maintaining such a relationship ?takes work,? she says.

The key to good marriages is similar in Umberson?s view. ?I think it?s the presence of emotional support, and that the person you?re with does make you feel emotionally supported,? she says. On the other hand, ?If your partner is critical and demanding? all the time, those ?are just red flags? in terms of marital happiness. And in terms of stress, she notes, ?marital strain is worse for your health than marital happiness is good for your health.?

Umberson concludes that she has conducted research on couples that were happily married for a long time. One common characteristic of many of these marriages was the willingness of each spouse to simply accept ?each other for what they are.? That?s a lesson for the newly and long-married alike.

Home Improvement Group, suppliers of double glazing and solar panels, offer some great energy saving advice to help consumers comabt the soaring cost of energy bills.

Over the last seven years the average dual fuel energy bill has risen by 117% to almost ?1300. With seven million households in the UK now in fuel poverty according to Consumer Focus, people are looking for other ways to make their homes more energy efficient. The Home Improvement Group, suppliers of solar power and double glazing, have offered up ten energy saving tips to help consumers cut back on their power consumption and consequently, their energy bills!

1.Use energy saving light bulbs: Energy saving light bulbs last ten times longer than regular ones which saves an average of ?55 over the lifetime of the bulb, rising to ?120 if they are used to replace a high wattage incandescent bulb. Significant savings can be made by switching to energy saving bulbs throughout every room in a property.

2.Cover saucepans: By putting a lid on pans, water boils faster and energy lost as heat is reduced. Also, by selecting the ring which is most appropriate to the size of the pan there will be less wasted energy.

3.Upgrade appliances: Even though it may seem counterproductive to spend money on a brand new dishwasher or washing machine, it can actually save money in the long run. Older appliances are often less energy efficient than their modern counterparts and they can lose what efficiency they had as they age. If you have a dishwasher which was purchased before 1994 it may be using 10 gallons more water per cycle than some new models which is very wasteful over a year. In addition to this, statics show that buying a new dishwasher can save 5000 gallons of water and nearly ?30 a year over washing dishes by hand so buying a new dishwasher need not be a luxury.

4.Unplug chargers: Even if the device isn?t connected, leaving a phone, tablet or laptop charger plugged in will use electricity and waste money. Even though it?s less convenient always turn off and unplug chargers that aren?t in use.

5.Microwave vegetables instead of using the hob: Not only is microwaving vegetables faster and more efficient, it uses two thirds less energy than cooking them on a hob saving you time and money.

6.Take scrupulous showers: Instead of leaving hot water running throughout a shower a keen energy saver will stand under the shower to get wet and then turn it off whilst they lather themselves up, only turning the water back on to rinse off.

7.Keep a well-stocked fridge: Full fridges conserve the cold even when the door is open, so a well stocked fridge is more efficient than an empty one. Of course, don?t fill a fridge with excessive amounts of food that will spoil before it is eaten!

8.Don?t listen to the radio via digital TV: Even though it may sometimes seem more convenient, listening to the radio via a TV can use over ten times more energy than tuning in with a radio. Flat screen TVs can consume a great deal of energy, so why turn them on just to listen to the radio?

9.Draw curtains at dusk: By drawing curtains at dusk you minimise the amount of heating that escapes through the windows. Draw the curtains in every room off the house at nightfall and your home will retain more heat. Windows with double glazing will also help to prevent heat being lost this way.

10.Insulate the loft: Laying insulated lagging or foam in attics and lofts is an excellent method of prevent heat loss through the roof. A one off payment for the material, which can easily be installed, can save a great deal in the long run. Also, homes with conservatories, especially very old ones, often loose heat through the conservatory roof. Relatively inexpensive insulation solutions are available for conservatory roofs too.
