Launch scrub hits first commercial ISS mission

A brave new chapter in commercial spaceflight failed to open before dawn broke in Florida this morning when the launch of the first private-sector-built cargo spacecraft was scrubbed at the last second.

A launch abort during the ignition sequence was ordered by a flight computer which detected a systems anomaly in one of the nine first-stage engines - just moments before lift off. It was something of a letdown for space fans and rocketeers alike - who have been on tenterhooks over the mission.

The Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon cargo capsule, built for NASA by Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) of Hawthorne, California, was to have launched at 4.55am EST (9.55 BST) - taking the hopes of the emerging commercial spaceflight sector with it. It's aim: to rendezvous and safely dock with the International Space Station.

But that will have to wait. Because the launch window to rendezvous with the ISS was only one second long today, there is no chance that another launch attempt can be made later today. A fresh launch attempt will now be made on 22 May assuming the engine anomaly has been fixed by then.

"We'll take time to investigate this anomaly," said a SpaceX spokesperson on its webcast. "But it looks like we still have a good spacecraft with which to try again early on Tuesday morning."

Launch success today was far from assured as this was only Falcon 9's third flight. Although the previous two flights were successful, each had suffered minor rolling motion and premature engine shutdown anomalies respectively on their way to orbit.

And each of those launches had experienced prelaunch scrubs to cope with anomalies: "We've certainly been here before," says SpaceX.

Investing in IPOs: Why Go Public?

Simply put, most companies go public to raise capital, either by issuing debt or stock.

First of all, being publicly traded opens the door to potentially huge returns for the owners.

But that's not all.

Public companies pay lower interest rates when issuing bonds. They also can issue more stock to grow through mergers and acquisitions.

Then there's the prestige factor, the pure ego satisfaction of hobnobbing with the fat cats on Wall Street.

But from an investor's point of view, the road to prosperity with companies going public is fraught with peril.

Even still, to most retail investors IPO s are exciting because you usually can't buy into a successful private company.

But let's not kid each other...

The odds of buying a piece of a hot IPO (known as an IPO allocation) are slim to none. Most IPO s leave retail investors completely behind.

You see, the only way to get in on an IPO is to have a relationship with one of the underwriters -- typically investment banks like Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE: GS), JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM) or Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS).

The underwriters work behind the scenes with the company to compile the proper regulatory filings with the Securities & Exchange Commission, handle the paperwork and determine the offering price of the stock.

If the underwriters know the IPO will be in great demand and the price is likely to jump, they'll shower their favorite institutional clients with an allocation at the initial price.

The big boys are then free to ride the initial surge on the first day of trading and dump the shares when the public jumps in. The whole idea is to line the pockets of big clients, leaving nothing on the table for the little guy.

Take Groupon Inc.'s (Nasdaq: GRPN) recent IPO, for example. Shares were initially priced at $20, but saw such heavy demand that the stock opened at $28. After a brief spike above $30 on its first trading day, the stock has fallen below $13.

Bottom line, only the biggest clients with the deepest pockets are going to get in on a hot IPO.

Facebook IPO: Ignore the Hype

You should be especially cautious if your broker calls you with an allocation for a hot IPO. It's probably because nobody else wants them.

It's important to remember that the underwriters are salesmen whose job it is to generate as much talk on "the Street" as possible. They often put on "road shows"-like Facebook did-- pitching IPOs as "once in a lifetime" opportunities.

But if you're thinking about investing in IPOs, the operative words should be "buyer beware."

In fact, if you look at the charts, you'll notice many IPO stocks tank after a few months.

That's because underwriters won't do an IPO without a contract signed by key employees prohibiting them from selling any shares of stock for a specified period of time - known as the "lock-up period."

The period can range anywhere from 3 to 24 months but 90 days is the minimum period stated under law.

Thing is, at the end of the lockup period, insiders usually sell their stock to bank their profits, driving the stock down.

But you can still make money on companies going public.

You just have to do your homework.

For instance, Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) went public on May 15, 1997, with an IPO valuation of $441 million. T oday it's $101 billion.

EBay Inc.'s (Nasdaq: EBAY) IPO valuation on Sept 24, 1998 was $2 billion. T oday it's $51 billion.

Just remember, don't buy a stock just because it's an IPO -- buy it because it's a great investment.

Jets DT Ellis reportedly agrees to plea deal

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) - New York Jets defensive lineman Kenrick Ellis reportedly has reached a plea agreement in a Virginia court that will reduce a felony charge to a misdemeanor.

Multiple reports Thursday say Ellis will plead guilty to misdemeanor assault and battery, citing comments from attorney S. Howard Woodson, who represents the victim, Dennis Eley.

Woodson said Eley likely will pursue a civil lawsuit, which he was originally filed for $3 million, then withdrawn.

The incident took place in April 2010 while Ellis was attending Hampton University. The Jets selected him in the third round of the 2011 draft.

Analysis: Argentines jump through new hoops to get dollars

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - Argentina's quest to keep dollars in the country is spawning illegal money trades inside offices and even schools. But big companies have fewer ways to skirt currency controls and must adapt to the country's offbeat, changeable rules.

President Cristina Fernandez, a feisty populist, vowed to "fine-tune" economic policy after winning re-election in October. She has since limited imports, imposed capital controls and seized a majority stake in top energy company YPF.

Fernandez must curb capital flight in a country still wary of government intervention after the currency devaluation and bank deposit freezes of its 2001-2002 financial crisis.

She needs dollars generated by a growing trade surplus to stay in Argentina to help fatten central bank reserves used to pay government debt.

Officials are micromanaging money flows to carry out this mission, limiting dollar purchases and discouraging dividend payments and international wire transfers.

As the red tape piles up, businesses face delays and distortions that are hitting private investment. Analysts say the tightened state grip could backfire as an economic slowdown cools consumer and corporate spending.

With limited access to dollars on the formal market, individuals and some small companies go in search of greenbacks on the black market, where costs are rising sharply.

Other companies buy bonds or shares they can sell abroad for dollars - which is legal but frowned upon by the government.

"If you ask a foreigner what the business climate is like, they will say they work 50 percent of the time on their actual business and another 50 percent or more to comply with all these regulations," a legal advisor to companies said on condition of anonymity, reflecting a general unwillingness to speak publicly.

"If you don't comply, you'll have a container held up at customs or other problems."

Argentines tend to save in the U.S. currency and have long smuggled dollars out of the country to dodge taxes.

To stop people spiriting hard currency from Argentina, the country's tax agency has dogs sniffing around for dollar stashes. A dog named Chalk found $110,000 hidden in a man's car as he tried to cross into Uruguay earlier this year.

The spread or gap between the formal dollar exchange rate and the parallel rate has quadrupled since Fernandez introduced new controls on the economy.

Business leaders are under extra pressure to keep their cash in Latin America's No. 3 economy, where growth is cooling fast and inflation tops 20 percent a year. They get phone calls from notorious government price czar Guillermo Moreno, who often decides when and why dollars change hands.

SCHOOL YARD DEALS

Argentines must have tax agency approval to buy foreign currency at the official exchange rate. A monthly limit is set on these purchases but sometimes operations are frozen for days, for reasons that go unexplained.

That has been the case in the last week, triggering a 7.5 percent drop in the peso's value on the black market as demand for dollars rose. The tax agency warned on Tuesday it will crack down on people selling dollars at the parallel rate.

Argentines are, however, adept at finding shortcuts. They see the latest controls as vexing but manageable.

"I've changed money at my children's school," an economist with foreign business contacts said. "You'll find these kinds of deals at every school in (wealthy areas like) Palermo, Recoleta, Belgrano and Martinez, and a black market inside every office."

"The problem is for big companies because they can't use the black market," he added. "Smaller companies always have some black money to play around with and they will go to the parallel market, or use the blue-chip swap rate, or whatever they have available."

CONSUMER BINGE

The blue-chip swap market reflects the implied exchange rate used to buy Argentine bonds or shares that can be sold overseas for dollars. Some companies get their money out of the country through these operations, which the government eyes closely.

The blue-chip swap rate has plunged to 5.81 pesos per dollar, versus the black-market rate of 5.49 per dollar. This represents a 31 percent and 23 percent premium, respectively, over the official interbank rate.

Another strategy for sending foreign currency abroad is to buy Argentina's Boden 2012 bonds that mature in August, the proceedings of which can be deposited in overseas accounts.

Some small- and medium-sized companies buy dollars on the black market and then import contraband goods with the help of corrupt customs officials, a source with knowledge of the foreign exchange market said.

But bigger companies tend to play by the government's rules and they have enough leverage to hash out accords over currency access and trade flows. They are putting their pesos into certificates of deposit and hunkering down to avoid roadblocks.

"The bottom line is that companies here make money. As long as we have a continuing consumer binge in Argentina, then companies will do pretty well here, despite all the craziness," a diplomatic source who works on economic matters said.

SIGNS OF FATIGUE

That consumer binge is flagging.

Consumer confidence sank 12.7 percent in April versus March, showing its steepest drop since September 2002, when Argentina's economy was mired in recession and still reeling from a world-record sovereign debt default.

The restricted access to dollars has also hit the real estate market, where sales are transacted in the U.S. currency. Property deals in the city of Buenos Aires fell year-on-year for a fourth straight month in March, local notaries reported.

Gross domestic investment fell year-on-year in February and March, declining for the first time since late 2009, according to Orlando J. Ferreres & Associates. The consulting firm said import curbs limiting capital goods purchases played a key role.

The complex web of regulations, coupled with a genuine economic slowdown, do not bode well for investment prospects. Argentina is Latin America's third-biggest economy but it only ranked No. 6 in foreign direct investment last year.

"What company headquarters will authorize investments if they can't repatriate the money later? That's a problem," a financial consultant said.

TRADE HOOPS

In February, the government began requiring prior state approval for nearly all imports, angering trade partners and prompting the European Union to prepare a suit against Argentina at the World Trade Organization.

The curbs have worked - at least in the short term. The trade surplus is growing again after shrinking in 2011 and 2010.

To control money flows, the government has sharply limited advance payments on imports and last month ordered exporters to cash in their earnings within 15 to 30 days of sealing a deal.

This means some companies will have to pre-finance their own sales abroad while their merchandise makes its way to buyers on the other side of the globe. Smaller export companies were later exempted from the new rules after they complained.

Even before these new procedures were imposed, companies were under pressure to boost exports to balance out their imports, leading to quirky deals like one in which BMW luxury car importers agreed to sell rice overseas.

"These are the rules of the game. I have two alternatives: I can go off and shoot Moreno and stop working in foreign trade, or I can adapt somehow and keep operating," said a person who works in foreign trade. "I see a lot of people adapting."

"LABEL jars, not people" and "stop medicalising the normal symptoms of life" read placards, as hundreds of protesters - including former patients, academics and doctors - gathered to lobby the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) annual meeting.

The demonstration aimed to highlight the harm the protesters believe psychiatry is perpetrating in the name of healing. One concern is that while psychiatric medications are more widely prescribed than almost any drugs in history, they often don't work well and have debilitating side effects. Psychiatry also professes to respect human rights, while regularly treating people against their will. Finally, psychiatry keeps expanding its list of disorders without solid scientific justification.

At the heart of the issue is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) - psychiatry's diagnostic "bible" (see main story). Allen Frances, who headed the last major rewrite of the manual - DSM-IV - fears that the revised version will undermine the profession's credibility. "What concerns me most," he says, "is that its publication will dramatically expand the realm of psychiatry and narrow the realm of normality."

Among the revisions he believes will be most damaging are those to generalised anxiety disorder, which threatens to turn the pains and disappointments of everyday life into mental illness, while "disruptive mood dysregulation disorder" will see children's temper tantrums become symptoms of a disorder.

Drug alternatives

One protester, Harvard graduate and writer Laura Delano, started taking psychiatric medication at age 14, after a bipolar diagnosis. She felt this worsened her state until, in 2004, she attempted suicide. It was only once she had rejected her treatment and her identity as a psychiatric patient that things began to get better.

Many of the protesters want reform in the shape of alternatives to drug treatment. As protest organiser Susan Rogers explained: "People here are for choice, for the right to decline as well as choose treatment. We want sufferers to know there are alternatives to hospitals and medication - they can go into peer support run by people like themselves."

"The best success rate for a diagnosis of schizophrenia is in rural Finland, where there is a slogan that problems aren't in our heads, but between our heads," says fellow organiser David Oaks. "They emphasise the importance of peer support in recovery."

Talking to psychiatrists as they filed past the protest, there was quite a lot of sympathy. "These voices have to be heard. We are seeing a manifestation of some legitimate concerns," said one.

Another was nearly as militant as the protesters: "Psychiatrists usually take 15 minutes to give a diagnosis, so we shouldn't be surprised if we are getting it wrong. These 15-minute sessions are a form of malpractice."

The APA's response was to say: "Many of the proposed changes help to better characterise people currently seeking treatment but who are not well defined by DSM-IV. It is unfortunate there are instances in which people do not feel they have benefited, but these circumstances cannot discredit the clinical practice of psychiatry, or those helped by mental healthcare."

It is significant that the protests exposed once again the lines of division not just between protesters and the establishment, but within the establishment too. Meanwhile, patients are still caught in the middle, sometimes to their detriment.

I was in a meeting with a?group of leaders the other day and after being prompted by a question most of them said that they had many acquaintances but very few friends.? It was clear they weren?t particularly happy by this fact, but felt their busy life didn?t leave them much of a choice.? I find it?paradoxical that in a day and age where we have so many more ways to stay connected with other people, every study I read says that people feel lonelier and?more disconnected than ever before.? This is especially troubling for people in leadership positions because they feel naturally isolated to begin with.

My own anecdotal experience is that women are better at starting and maintaining close relationships than men.? It is just how they are hardwired.? However, even women are now struggling to stay connected with each other under the pressures of busy work weeks, long commutes and family commitments.?? Sometimes it can feel like there is just too much to get done and not enough hours in the day.? When you find yourself in this space it?s hard to reach out and make friendships a priority.? However, cultivating meaningful relationship outside of your spouse/significant other and family is a critical part of a happy life.?

There need to be people in your life who don?t primarily see you as husband or wife or parent or grandparent or son or sibling or extended family or colleague or boss.? You need to be able to step out from behind a given role and just be you.? Good friends actually allow you to be an individual without any predetermined agenda besides enjoying each other?s company and finding common bonds.? You can relax and let ?let your hair down? and just offer each other support or have fun.? You can be ?real? without worrying about the consequences of how that might affect the formal relationship.? Friendship is almost always a matter of choice rather than obligation.

If we continually narrow our relationship circles as we get older we run the risk of smothering the remaining?people who are left.???We also increase our probability of ending up feeling lonely and ultimately alone.? There is nothing sadder to me when I attend a funeral and hardly anyone attends or when someone in a hospital or nursing home gets minimal visitors.?? In the end,?our happiness is directly correlated with the quality of relationships we form with other people.??Acquaintances come and go and are?usually insignificant in the big picture of life.? However, going through life building and maintaining good friendships will make the journey less arduous and more meaningful.? Don?t get me wrong. Family should always be a priority and is the most important thing, but it isn?t everything.

Is There a Market For Chocolate Half and Half?

Is there a market for chocolate half and half? A coworker of mine believes it?s a huge money maker.?

The ?Big Guy,? the coworker, constantly brainstorms for million dollar food ideas. He knows that deep inside he holds the idea for the next big food money maker. His unmovable faith in ?chocolate half and half? led him to survey the customers at Spadafora?s Seafood Market this past summer.

His love for half and half(loves it so much he drinks it alone) sparked this ingenious idea. But there may be a few issues with such brilliance.

The fat content per tablespoon of half and half is very high. A more health conscious American society may overlook such a minor fact if chocolate is added to the drink. Chocolate makes everything better and most eaters show a double standard when chocolate enters the picture.

Half and half is commonly added to coffee. At first skeptics may shoot down the chocolate addition, but soon they?ll realize that since chocolate does makes everything better, the taste of coffee will improve substantially with the innovation.?

Chocolate half and half has enormous upside and potential. I was completely astounded when customers, mainly women, laughed and?weren't?quick to approve of such unparalleled brilliance. There will always be naysayers, but for the big thinkers like Big Guy, perseverance wins out in the end.

Hold off on that Aeroflot booking just for now. While this isn't the US release many will be anticipating, it looks like Nokia's big-eyed 808 PureView phone is getting a release a little closer to home. Those of you wanting to sample some of that 41-megapixel delight, now need only plan a trip south of the border, as Mexico is set to start selling the handset sometime this month. Much like its Russian and Indian debut, specifics on dates are sparse, with the Spanish version of the Nokia blog only going as far to say "some weeks later" (than the India / Russia release) qualifying that, however, as "this month". At least if you do venture down you can bank on some killer holiday pics.

Rihanna Twitpics: The Weirdest Batch Yet?

Rihanna has become infamous for her Twitpics and Instagram uploads in recent months, but her latest set is strange even by her high standards.

If you thought she couldn't top grinding with strippers or sitting on her bodyguard's shoulders playing with white powder on his head, think again.

Wednesday morning she uploaded this one. When someone asked where she's been as "You been quiet all day", Rihanna replied with this pic:

Yup, her arm with an IV attached. No other comment or caption.

It's definitely her arm, too, because the elaborate nail painting job that she got before attending the Met Gala on Monday was still on display.

Said manicure, for what it's worth, meant she was late to the event, missing her slot on the red carpet and infuriating Vogue's Anna Wintour.

A few hours after posting the IV picture she uploaded a pic of herself by a plane with the caption, "My ride home NY days LA nights #itwuzreal."

This implies she's not in hospital ... or at least she's not anymore.

Not that this is her first IV Twitpic. In November she tweeted a similar picture after being hospitalized with severe exhaustion in Sweden.

Is she exhausted again? It's not unlikely. Girl goes hard.

Augmented reality sandbox lets you change the course of rivers, won't get you wet

Ask in any kid, playing in the sandbox is fun enough on its own, but too much moisture will turn your grainy playground into a lumpy mess. Researchers at UC Davis have cooked up one solution: an augmented reality sandbox. Much like last year's SandyStation, the project uses a Kinect sensor in conjunction with a digital projector and a bit of software to overlay topographical data and simulated water over a traditional -- and dry -- sandbox. The end result is an augmented environment that can be used to teach geographic, geologic and hydrological concepts. The team hopes the project will help them develop hands-on exhibits for science museums, teaching visitors about contour lines, watersheds, catchment areas and more. InFocus IN1124

The InFocus IN1124 ($975 direct) is a compact, super-light, yet bright data projector geared to business travelers who need to frequently present to small groups. It?s highly portable, although you do need to run presentations from a computer as there?s no port for a USB thumb drive. Image quality is middling, though it?s up to the task of typical business presentations.

The IN1124?s brightness is rated at 3,000 lumens. The projector has a native XGA (1,024 by 768) resolution, a 4:3 aspect ratio typical of data projectors. ?At 2.8 by 8.6 by 7 inches (HWD) and 3.4 pounds, it?s very compact and lightweight. The Editors? Choice Epson PowerLite 93+ ($549 direct, 4 stars) isn?t quite as bright (at 2,600 lumens), while the NEC NP-V300X ($779 direct, 3.5 stars) matches the IN1124?s brightness. Though portable, they?re both larger and heavier than the InFocus. The 2,500-lumen Boxlight TraveLight3 ($999 list, 3.5 stars), another XGA projector, is roughly the same dimensions as the IN1124.

This projector is black and boxy. The front can be tilted upwards using an extendible riser. There are both zoom and focus wheels; I had no problem in bringing the IN1124 to a reasonably sharp focus.

The IN1124 packs a typical selection of ports for an ultraportable projector: an HDMI port (which we?re frequently seeing these days, even on XGA projectors); S-Video; an RCA jack for composite video; audio-in; VGA; and a USB mini-B port that you can plug into your computer for remote mouse support, allowing you to use the projector?s remote control in lieu of the mouse to advance slides and the like.

One port that would have been a useful addition is a USB type A to let you run a presentation computer free off of a USB thumb drive. Without it, you still have to lug a laptop with you. The projector does come with a soft carrying case for protection.

Data and Video Testing

I tested the IN1124 from about 10 feet away, where it threw a 6-feet diagonal image on our test screen that stood up well to ambient light. In testing with the DisplayMate suite (www.displaymate.com), data image quality was typical of a DLP data projector. There was some tinting, most often in the form of fringing, in which the boundary between a bright and dark area (for example, the edges of the image, would appear colored?yellow if at the top or right edge, blue if at the bottom. Areas of actual yellow, though, looked muddy and slightly green at times.

All DLP projectors are potentially subject to a rainbow effect in which white areas break up into their component colors when one shifts one?s gaze (or, in the case of video, when something moves onscreen). This effect was obvious to me in images that tended to bring it out. White-on-black text was readable though fuzzy at the smallest two sizes, and was subject to mild tinting. Image quality should be fine for typical data presentations, unless you require exacting color.

Video quality is adequate for short video clips as part of a presentation. The projector did well in resolving detail in both dark and bright areas. Colors seemed reasonably true, except for two issues. The rainbow effect was more obvious than in typical DLP projectors, and people who are sensitive to it would likely not want to watch this projector?s video for any length of time.

The other problem is color fringing. The intersections where bright areas met dark backgrounds (including the edges of the screen when the part of the image near them was bright) frequently showed as colored lines, yellow if at the top (or right edge) of the bright area, and blue if at the bottom. The yellow edge was most notable, and the fringing was visible often enough to be distracting?it really stood out in the type in the film credits.

Another drawback to showing video with the IN1124 is that its sound system, which employs a 1-watt speaker, is feeble. You?d have to be very close to the projector for it to be audible.

The InFocus In1124 is a lightweight, highly portable projector fitting for its intended audience: businesspeople that need to make frequent presentations to small groups while traveling. It?s brighter?and lighter?than the Editors? Choice XGA-resolution Epson PowerLite 93+. However, the InFocus?s image quality was middling while the Epson?s data and video image quality were both excellent. The 93+ has the loud and clear audio that the IN1124 lacks. However, it?s not as wieldy, as the InFocus, so for frequent presenters who need a small and bright projector to get the job done while on the road the IN1124 may be preferable. The InFocus is brighter than the equally portable Boxlight TraveLight3, with about the same image quality and sound.

The Blackberry 10 Dev Alpha we wrapped our mitts around last week didn't tell us much about RIM's big QNX-based OS update (being loaded with PlayBook OS 2.0 and all), but Crackberry forum user Biggulpseh seemingly has the deets that the folks in Waterloo weren't ready to reveal. So-called internal documents reportedly detail a tilt-senstive lock screen that pushes notifications to the user based on the device's movement (called "cinnamon toast"), a screen-sharing ability to ramp up the productivity of video calls and a robust video editor resulting from RIM's acquisition of JayCut last year. Biggulpseh says the images come from a "trusted source," and are part of a document that outlines upcoming features for the benefit of the firm's employees.
