Obama political group steps up immigration efforts

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama's political support group is stepping up its immigration efforts as the Senate holds hearings on overhauling the nation's broken system.

Organizing for Action will hold an immigration "day of action" May 2 that could include rallies around the country and visits to members of Congress. The group is also holding nearly 250 phone banks Tuesday to appeal for supporters to get involved.

The goal is to mobilize OFA's massive voter database ? the same one that helped elect Obama twice ? to support one of the president's top legislative priorities. Obama is backing a draft bill written by bipartisan senators that would secure the border and provide a path to citizenship for some of the 11 million people in the U.S. illegally.

Grains of sand from ancient supernova found in meteorites: Supernova may have been the one that triggered the formation of the solar system

Apr. 19, 2013 ? It's a bit like learning the secrets of the family that lived in your house in the 1800s by examining dust particles they left behind in cracks in the floorboards.

By looking at specks of dust carried to earth in meteorites, scientists are able to study stars that winked out of existence long before our solar system formed.

This technique for studying the stars -- sometimes called astronomy in the lab -- gives scientists information that cannot be obtained by the traditional techniques of astronomy, such as telescope observations or computer modeling.

Now scientists working at Washington University in St. Louis with support from the McDonnell Center for the Space Sciences, have discovered two tiny grains of silica (SiO2; the most common constituent of sand) in primitive meteorites. This discovery is surprising because silica is not one of the minerals expected to condense in stellar atmospheres -- in fact, it has been called 'a mythical condensate.'

Five silica grains were found earlier, but, because of their isotopic compositions, they are thought to originate from AGB stars, red giants that puff up to enormous sizes at the end of their lives and are stripped of most of their mass by powerful stellar winds.

These two grains are thought to have come instead from a core-collapse supernova, a massive star that exploded at the end of its life.

Because the grains, which were found in meteorites from two different bodies of origin, have spookily similar isotopic compositions, the scientists speculate in the May 1 issue of Astrophysical Journal Letters, that they may have come from a single supernova, perhaps even the one whose explosion is thought to have triggered the formation of the solar system.

A summary of the paper will also appear in the Editors' Choice compilation in the May 3 issue of Science magazine.

The first presolar grains are discovered

Until the 1960s most scientists believed the early solar system got so hot that presolar material could not have survived.

But in 1987 scientists at the University of Chicago discovered miniscule diamonds in a primitive meteorite (ones that had not been heated and reworked). Since then they've found grains of more than ten other minerals in primitive meteorites.

Many of these discoveries were made at Washington University, home to Ernst Zinner, PhD, research professor in Physics at Washington University in St. Louis, who helped develop the instruments and techniques needed to study presolar grains (and the last author on the paper).

The scientists can tell these grains came from ancient stars because they have highly unusual isotopic signatures. (Isotopes are different atoms of the same chemical element that have a slightly different mass.)

Different stars produce different proportions of isotopes. But the material from which our solar system was fashioned was mixed and homogenized before the solar system formed. So all of the planets and the Sun have the pretty much the same isotopic composition, known simply as "solar."

Meteorites, most of which are pieces of asteroids, have the solar composition as well, but trapped deep within the primitive ones are pure samples of stars. The isotopic compositions of these presolar grains provide clues to the complex nuclear and convective processes operating within stars, which are poorly understood.

Even our nearby Sun is still a mystery to us; much less more exotic stars that are incomprehensibly far away.

Some models of stellar evolution predict that silica could condense in the cooler outer atmospheres of stars but others predict silicon would be completely consumed by the formation of magnesium- or iron-rich silicates, leaving none to form silica.

But in the absence of any evidence, few modelers even bothered to discuss the condensation of silica in stellar atmospheres. "We didn't know which model was right and which was not, because the models had so many parameters," said Pierre Haenecour, a graduate student in Earth and Planetary Sciences, who is the first author on the paper.

The first silica grains are discovered In 2009 Christine Floss, PhD, research professor of physics at Washington University in St. Louis, and Frank Stadermann, PhD, since deceased, found the first silica grain in a meteorite. Their find was followed within the next few years by the discovery of four more grains.

All of these grains were enriched in oxygen-17 relative to solar. "This meant they had probably come from red giant or AGB stars" Floss said.

When Haenecour began his graduate study with Floss, she had him look at a primitive meteorite that had been picked up in Antarctica by a U.S. team. Antarctica is prime meteorite-hunting-territory because the dark rocks show up clearly against the white snow and ice.

Haenecour with the NanoSIMS 50 ion microprobe he used to look for presolar grains in a primitive meteorite. The silica grain he found is too small to be seen with the unaided eye, but the microprobe can magnify it 20,000 times, to about the size of a chocolate chip.

Haenecour found 138 presolar grains in the meteorite slice he examined and to his delight one of them was a silica grain, But this one was enriched in oxygen-18, which meant it came from a core-collapse supernova, not a red giant.

He knew that another graduate student in the lab had found a silica grain rich in oxygen-18. Xuchao Zhao, now a scientist at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics in Beijing, China, found his grain in a meteorite picked up in Antarctica by the Chinese Antarctic Research Expedition.

With two specks to go on, Haenecour tackled the difficult problem of calculating how a supernova might have produced silica grains. Before it explodes, a supernova is a giant onion, made up of concentric layers dominated by different elements.

A massive star that will explode at the end of its life, a core-collapse supernova has a layered structure rather like that of an onion.

Some theoretical models predicted that silica might be produced in massive oxygen-rich layers near the core of the supernova. But if silica grains could condense there, Haenecour and his colleagues thought, they should be enriched in oxygen-16, not oxygen-18.

They found they could reproduce the oxygen-18 enrichment of the two grains by mixing small amounts of material from the oxygen-rich inner zones and the oxygen-18-rich helium/carbon zone with large amounts of material from the hydrogen envelope of the supernova.

In fact, Haenecour said, the mixing needed to produce the composition of the two grains was so similar that the grains might well come from the same supernova. Could it have been the supernova whose explosion is thought to have kick-started the collapse of the molecular cloud out of which the planets of the solar system formed?

How strange to think that two tiny grains of sand could be the humble bearers of such momentous tidings from so long ago and so far away.

Egyptian justice minister resigns

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's Justice Minister Ahmed Mekky has resigned in protest at what he sees as "an assault" on the judiciary by the Islamist-led authorities, the Justice Ministry spokesman said on Sunday.

Mekky submitted his resignation to President Mohamed Mursi on Saturday, said the spokesman, Ahmed Salam. It followed a protest on Friday by Mursi's Islamist backers demanding the "purification" of the judiciary.

A bill has been submitted to parliament which critics say would give the government too much control over the make-up of the judiciary.

Mekky, who was appointed in August, had been quoted in local media as saying he would resign if the law was passed. The Islamist-dominated upper house of parliament has yet to vote on the legislation.

Mursi said on Saturday he planned to reshuffle the cabinet.

Mekky was widely regarded as a supporter of judicial independence during the rule of former President Hosni Mubarak, but his critics had accused him of siding with the new Islamist-led authorities.

Thousands of Islamist supporters of Mursi rallied on Friday, calling for an independent judiciary by passing the new legislation and removing corrupt members of legal institutions.

Friction between the government and the judiciary has been on the rise since March when the Administrative Court ordered the cancellation of a Mursi decree calling for parliamentary elections, forcing a delay in voting due to have begun in April.

Genetics defines a distinct liver disease

Apr. 21, 2013 ? Large-scale genetic study defines relationship between primary sclerosing cholangitis and other autoimmune diseases.

Researchers have newly associated nine genetic regions with a rare autoimmune disease of the liver known as primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). This brings the total number of genetic regions associated with the disease to 16.

Approximately 70 per cent of people who suffer from PSC also suffer from IBD. The team showed that only half of the newly associated genetic regions were shared with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). For the first time, this definitively proves that PSC, although genetically related to IBD, is a distinct disease.

PSC is a chronic, progressive disease of the bile ducts that channels bile from the liver into the intestines. It can cause inflammation of the bile ducts (cholangitis) and liver scarring that leads to liver cirrhosis and liver failure. There are no effective treatments available. Although PSC affects only one in 10,000 people, it is a leading cause of liver transplant surgery.

?Before our study, it was never quite clear whether PSC was a complication of IBD or a distinct disease in its own right,? says Dr Carl Anderson, lead author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. ?We have proven it to be a unique disease, and hope that our results will inform the development of more effective treatments, designed to target the biological pathways involved in causing the disease?.

The work involved an international group of scientists from the International PSC study group recruiting patients from 13 countries within Europe and North America. Without this large collaborative effort it would not have been possible to obtain the large number of patient DNA samples necessary for the study.

The team used DNA genotyping technology to survey more thoroughly regions of the genome known to underlie other immune-related diseases to discover if they also play a role in PSC susceptibility.

In addition to the nine genetic regions newly associated, they also saw strong signals at three regions of the genome previously associated with the disease. Of these twelve genetic regions, six are also associated with IBD, while the six other regions showed little to no association in a recent large study of IBD.

?Using the Immunochip genotyping chip, we can pull apart the genetic relationships between these autoimmune diseases and begin to see not only their genetic similarities, but also the differences,? says Jimmy Liu, PhD student and first author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. ?As PSC is a rare disorder, sample collection is more difficult than for other, more common, autoimmune diseases. We hope that with more samples from patients, we?ll be able to link more genetic regions to the disease, and it will become easier to identify underlying pathways that could act as therapeutic targets.?

Three of the genetic regions associated with PSC fall within a single biological system that underlies variation in T cells, cells important to our immune response. One gene that controls this pathway, HDAC7, is known to be a key factor in immune tolerance and the new data strongly suggests exploring the possibility that drugs affecting HDAC7 function may serve as future therapeutics in PSC.

In an extended analysis, the team identified an additional 33 genetic regions that are also involved in several common immune-mediated conditions (celiac disease, Crohn?s disease, ulcerative colitis, type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, sarcoidosis and psoriasis). This analysis shows that PSC shares many genetic risk loci with other immune-mediated diseases and opens up the possibility for testing drugs known to be effective in genetically similar diseases for efficacy in PSC.

The next step for the team is to do a high-powered search throughout the entire genomes of PSC patients to find specific regions associated with PSC outside of the regions included on the Immunochip genotyping chip.

?This study has uncovered more about the genetics underlying PSC than any before it, but this is only the first step? says Dr Tom Hemming Karlsen, lead author from Oslo University Hospital, Norway. ?We hope the ongoing scientific and clinical research being conducted through the International PSC study group will help improve the outlook for those currently suffering at the hands of this disease?

?Our study, which is the largest of its type for PSC, would not have been possible without the help of the patients with this rare disorder,? adds Dr Hemming Karlsen.

Scroll Marker Helps Keep Your Place on Long Web Pages

Chrome: If you're reading a long article on a computer screen, it can be easy to lose your place while scrolling. Scroll Marker draws a small line at the bottom of your screen to keep your eyes in the right place while you move down the page.

This is basically the digital equivalent of using a bookmark or your finger to keep track of your position on a printed page. When you enable the extension, it will draw a thin line across the bottom of your browser. When you scroll, it will move with the content and remain in place for a few moments to keep you from losing your spot. For such a simple app, Scroll Marker comes with lots of customization options. You can change the size and color of the line, how far it's offset from the bottom of the browser window, and how long it stays in place after you scroll.

This is something you'll probably keep disabled most of the time, but it's helpful if you're on a page without much formatting that doesn't give you a lot of visual anchors, or if you're the kind of person that has to keep a finger on the page.

Twitter launches iTunes-connected #music app for iOS

Twitter Music

This morning Twitter announced #music, a new app which allows Twitter users to post and listen to embedded tracks from iTunes, Spotify, or Rdio. By checking out the new #NowPlaying section, you can get a snapshot view of what's being listened to by the people you follow. For those looking for something new, you can flip through the Suggested, Emerging, and Popular sections. If you're a subscriber to either Spotify or Rdio, you can listen to the full tracks, but otherwise you just get an iTunes preview. Links are provided to the Twitter accounts of performing artists from the playback window, along with options to share the track yourself.

What's particularly interesting about this whole thing is that #music isn't just folded into the native Twitter app; it's an entirely separate app altogether. It's certainly cool that Twitter's making new apps, but I can't help but feel that this feature could have been a huge differentiator to the native Twitter client. It also feels like the iTunes connection could be a bit stronger than simply pulling in previews and linking off to the store; Twitter was cozy with Ping once upon a time, after all.

The initial rollout for Twitter #music is taking place in the U.S., Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. An Android roll-out and wider international spread are in the works, but in the meantime, they can still enjoy the web version. Spotify and Rdio customers, are you pumped about the new service? Those of you that aren't subscribers, could a social engine like this get you to sign up? Could you see yourself buying a track through iTunes that was discovered through Twitter #music?

Venezuela crackdown called worst in years

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? National Guard troops beat dozens of opposition supporters inside a barracks for refusing to accept the government-certified electoral victory of Hugo Chavez's heir, a leading human rights lawyer charged Thursday in what he called Venezuela's worst political repression in six years.

Alfredo Romero said his group's lawyers also compiled evidence supporting opposition activists' claims that National Guard troops had used excessive force against protesters, including shooting some point-blank with plastic shotgun pellets.

As details of the crackdown emerged, Nicolas Maduro prepared to be sworn in as president and the speaker of the National Assembly again threatened to bar the opposition from its only remaining political platform, the legislature, unless it recognized Maduro's legitimacy.

Romero said the beatings occurred at National Guard barracks No. 47 in the western city of Barquisimeto after at least 300 protesters were arrested across Venezuela for backing opposition candidate Henrique Capriles' demand for a recount of all the votes cast Sunday.

Interrogators "put baseball caps on these kids' heads with a pro-government insignia ... and made them say they recognized the Maduro government, and if they said 'No' they were beaten," Romero said, adding that most of the detainees ranged in age from 15 to 22.

Asked about the allegations, Interior Ministry spokesman Jorge Galindo called them "totally false, absurd and without basis." He said the detainees, though in a military barracks, were being overseen by ministry officials to "guarantee their rights."

Romero called the crackdown Venezuela's worst since Chavez shut down the opposition TV station RCTV in 2006 when more than 250 people were arrested. His 12-year-old group, Foro Penal Venezolano, has more than 200 lawyers who represent without charge people they consider political prisoners.

He said the group has complained to the Inter-American Human Rights Commission, whose rulings Venezuela's government no longer recognizes, and is preparing a complaint to the International Criminal Court.

One of the worst cases of excessive force this week occurred in the central city of Valencia, members of the opposition's youth wing said in Caracas.

They said National Guardsmen fired plastic pellets at extremely close range at a group protesting the regime-friendly National Electoral Council's decision to ratify the victory of Nicolas Maduro.

Maduro is to be sworn in Friday in the National Assembly at a ceremony being boycotted by the opposition because its deputies are not being allowed to address the body unless they recognize his presidency as legitimate.

The government says 15 countries including Iran, China and Saudi Arabia were sending high-level delegations. Brazil said its president, Dilma Rousseff, was attending as was Argentina's Cristina Fernandez, but it was not clear whether the president of neighboring Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, would attend.

On Thursday, Maduro headed to Lima, Peru, for an evening meeting of presidents of the Union of South American Nations, UNASUR, to discuss Venezuela's post-election tensions.

The meeting was convened by Peru's president, Ollanta Humala, who holds the organization's rotating chair, and every leader on the continent save Ecuador's Rafael Correa, who was traveling in Europe, was attending, said Peru's deputy foreign minister, Fernando Rojas.

The youth opposition wing members displayed photographs showing deep, bloody wounds on the skin the hand and arm of Jonny Alvarado, a local leader of the centrist Proyecto Venezuela party who they said had been shot three times in the arm and undergone two surgeries in an attempt to save his hand.

The AP confirmed Alvarado's non-life-threatening injuries with the director of the hospital where he was treated.

At least 10 other activists were hit by pellets, some in the head, but not hurt as seriously, said Carlos Graffe, Proyecto Venezuela's youth leader. He said other protesters were punched or hit with batons by National Guardsmen.

A total of 400 were injured nationwide by authorities and government backers, said Juan Requesens, national coordinator of the opposition's youth wing.

In Monagas state, a group of 30 to 40 protesters was attacked by pro-government forces, then detained by authorities when they tried to flee, said Diego Scharifker, president of the youth wing of the Nuevo Tiempo party. He said virtually all were anti-government, but National Guard members had even swept up a handful of pro-government youth during sweeps of streets.

Romero said other activists described being arrested as they were walking home from peaceful protests.

The government alleges Capriles' backers have incited all the postelection violence, which it says has caused eight deaths and 70 injuries. It also charges the opposition loyalists have burned eight health clinics and several offices of the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela.

Non-government media and private citizens have published photos of unmolested clinics and party offices that they said disproved the claims.

Chief Prosecutor Luisa Ortega reiterated on Thursday the government's contention that neither it nor its supporters were to blame for any of the violence that followed Sunday's vote.

"A common denominator is that the wounded and injured are all supporters of Chavismo," she said in an interview on state TV.

Romero said 71 youths in all were arrested in Barquisimeto on Monday and Tuesday, when opposition supporters marched on regional offices of the electoral council, while 83 were arrested in Valencia over those two days.

He said it appeared that most were being freed Thursday, but that many faced criminal charges that include public incitement, destroying public property and other crimes.

Other arrests occurred in the states of Barinas, Merida and Maracay, Romero added, but he said he didn't have solid information on events there.

The prosecutor, Ortega, said Thursday that a total of 135 people had been arrested across Venezuela, with 90 of them charged with crimes.

The country awaited, meanwhile, word on whether the electoral council would agree to Capriles demand for a vote-by-vote recount after receiving the opposition's petition on Wednesday.

National Assembly Speaker Diosdado Cabello repeated the threat he made Tuesday to bar the opposition from the chamber, it's only platform on the national political stage. The opposition has just three of Venezuela's 23 governorships.

"I repeat to deputies of the opposition, just in case by chance they didn't understand, if they don't recognize Maduro as president I won't recognize them in the AN (National Assembly)."

There would be no constitutional basis for such an action, but Maduro and his ruling circle has paid little heed to the document since their mentor disappeared in December to Cuba for cancer surgery, never to be heard from publicly again.

Cabello was one of the closest allies of Chavez, who died March 5 after a long battle with cancer.

The ruling socialists control the legislature with 165 seats to 98 for the opposition and elections are not due until next year.

Katy Perry lists home purchased with Russell Brand

This week in celebrity real estate, Katy Perry listed her home officially on the market, Charlize Theron sold a home that once inspired a Beatles song and singer Colbie Caillat?s home is for sale.

Katy Perry lists Hollywood Hills home for $6.925 million
Katy Perry and Russell Brand finalized their divorce in July 2012, and by most accounts have moved on with their lives ? Perry dated singer John Mayer for a while, and Brand has been spotted with model Zara Martinin London.

However, a few links to their relationship still remain; namely real estate. Not only do the two own an apartment in New York ? one they?ve had listed for several years ? but they own another residence in Hollywood Hills that Perry just listed on the open market for $6.925 million.

According to property records, Brand and Perry bought the home, located at 8159 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, Calif. 90069, for $6.5 million and reportedly never lived there. Perry has been trying to quietly sell the home without officially listing it for quite some time. Sticking it on the MLS as an official sale seems to be her final attempt to dump the property.

Besides the celebrity ownership, the three-acre estate has quite a bit going for it. Built in 1921, the home is near the Chateau Marmont and Frank Lloyd Wright?s famed Storer House. Perry?s two-story property is gated and private, with 8,835 square feet of living space, seven bedrooms and 11 baths. The property also includes two guest houses, a carriage house and the ubiquitous celebrity-style pool with waterfall.

Charlize Theron?s home?once a muse for George Harrison?sells
It?s widely known that 1567 Blue Jay Way, Los Angeles, Calif. 90069 once served as the inspiration for George Harrison?s hit ?Blue Jay Way,? but the mid-century property was also recently owned by Charlize Theron.

The South African actress just sold the property, according to a source. The buyer, represented by Gary Gold of Hilton & Hyland, paid $3.8 million for the three-bedroom.

Theron purchased the home in 2009 for $3.625 million and has had it on and off the market since 2012. Rodeo Realty held the listing, slowly dropping the price from $4.599 million to $3.999 million over 10 months.

The story goes that Harrison was sitting in the Hollywood Hills home, playing an organ, while waiting for someone to pick him up. In those few moments, inspiration struck, and his hit song was written.

Blue Jay Way has long been coveted, for more than musical inspiration. Perched above Los Angeles, it?s within the ?Bird Streets,? a residential area known to be an exclusive enclave popular with celebs. Windy, secluded with stunning views of the city lights, the area has been home to Jennifer Aniston, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Jodie Foster and Keanu Reeves.

Theron?s home was constructed in 1964 and measures 4,116 square feet with three bedrooms and three baths. Built in a ?U-shape,? the home has walls of glass with spectacular views of downtown, a media screening room, outdoor living spaces and a pool.

Colbie Caillat?s home, featured on MTV?s ?Cribs,? for sale
Despite her chart-topping pop hits such as ?Bubbly,? Colbie Caillat lived with her parents for quite a while during the beginning of her career and even showed off her parents? Tarzana home in an episode of MTV?s ?Cribs.?

According to TMZ and property records, Caillat?s parents have just hoisted the home, located at 6025 Calvin Ave., Tarzana, Calif. 91356, on the market for $1.399 million.

Caillat comes from a musical family; her father won a Grammy in 1977 for co-producing Fleetwood Mac?s iconic ?Rumours? album, and Caillat reportedly wrote songs for her album ?Breakthrough? at the home.

Situated behind gates and a long drive, the private residence has lush landscaping and a secluded pool with waterfall. The 3,701-square-foot home has four bedrooms, 4.5 baths and an updated kitchen with granite counters.

Verizon Galaxy S4 officially confirmed via Samsung website

Verizon SGS4

No Verizon logo on the home button, so you can cross that off your list of things to worry about

Up until a couple of days ago, we've only had leaks to confirm the existence of Verizon's version of the Samsung Galaxy S4. Today, Samsung has made two new pages live on its official website -- one for the black Verizon model, and one for the white.

Carrier branding looks to be more conservative than with the Galaxy Note 2 -- no home button branding in sight. Other than the Verizon logo on back, this version seems to be identical to the other carrier variants. The same specs and hardware features are shared with the entire U.S. Galaxys S family this time around.

For the official specifications list, as well as pictures from all angles of both the black and white models, check out the Samsung links at the bottom. If the previous availability leak pans out, we can expect Verizon to start selling their Galaxy S4 on May 30.

Seasonal patterns of tropical rainfall changes from global warming revealed

Apr. 15, 2013 ? Projections of rainfall changes from global warming have been very uncertain because scientists could not determine how two different mechanisms will impact rainfall. The two mechanisms turn out to complement each other and together shape the spatial distribution of seasonal rainfall in the tropics, according to the study of a group of Chinese and Hawaii scientists that is published in the April 14, 2013, online issue of Nature Geoscience.

The one mechanism, called "wet-gets-wetter," predicts that rainfall should increase in regions that already have much rain, with a tendency for dry regions to get dryer. The second mechanism, called the "warmer-gets-wetter," predicts rainfall should increase in regions where sea surface temperature rises above the tropical average warming.

The team of scientists compared current rainfall in the tropics with future rainfall projections from simulations of 18 cutting-edge climate models forced with a likely scenario of atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations. They found that rainfall in the models increases more in regions that currently are already wet and decreases slightly in currently dry regions, supporting the wet-gets-wetter mechanism. But they also found evidence for the warmer-gets-wetter mechanism in that the higher the surface temperature in a region, the more the rainfall. By merging the impact from the two mechanisms, they noted that they could account for nearly 80 percent of the variations in the models' projected rainfall changes from global warming.

The complementary action of the two mechanisms is because the pattern of ocean warming induces more convection and rainfall near the Equator, where the temperature warming peaks, and subsidence and drying further away from the Equator, reflecting the warmer-gets-wetter view. But as this band of increased rain marches back and forth across the Equator with the Sun, it causes seasonal rainfall anomalies that follow the wet-gets-wetter pattern.

The wet-gets-wetter mechanism contributes more to the projected seasonal rainfall changes, whereas the warmer-gets-warmer mechanism more to the mean annual rainfall changes.

"Because our present observations of seasonal rainfall are much more reliable than the future sea surface temperatures, we can trust the models' projections of seasonal mean rainfall for regional patterns more than their annual mean projections," says co-author Shang-Ping Xie, meteorology professor at the International Pacific Research Center, University of Hawaii at Manoa and Roger Revelle Professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California at San Diego. "This is good news for monsoon regions where rainfall by definition is seasonal and limited to a short rainy season. Many highly populated countries under monsoon influences already face water shortages."

Risk assets hit as U.S., China data stirs recovery worry

By Chikako Mogi

TOKYO (Reuters) - Risk assets from commodities to Asian shares slid on Monday as weaker-than-expected U.S. and Chinese data raised concerns about the global economic outlook, prompting investors to book some gains from recent market rallies.

Global equities and commodities slumped late last week on a negative reading of U.S. consumer sentiment and soft retail sales, as well as on rekindled worries in the euro zone. This raised investor sensitivity to data due this session from China, the world's second-largest economy.

China said on Monday its economic recovery unexpectedly stumbled in the first three months of 2013, with the annual rate of growth easing to 7.7 percent from 7.9 percent in the final quarter of last year. Economists had forecast 8 percent growth. Another data showed industrial output in March grew 8.9 percent from a year earlier, undershooting expectations for a 10 percent rise.

"U.S. data was just a start, and it shows that the global recovery is not quite as good as everyone thinks it is. And today, it's been backed up by China data," said Stan Shamu, market strategist at IG Markets in Sydney.

"It's just a broad risk sell-off as investors grow a little bit skeptical about the recovery that had driven markets much higher over the past several months. A lot of people just use any fragile economic data as an excuse to get out of it and lock in some gains," he said.

The sluggish data should underscore the need to keep global monetary stimulus in place, helping to support markets eventually, he added.

The MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> fell 1.2 percent, led by a 3 percent slide in its materials sector <.miapjmt00pus> as gold and silver plummeted.

Spot gold fell as far as $1,427.14 an ounce, its lowest since April 2011, and was last down 2.5 percent at $1,442.41. Spot silver fell to its lowest since November 2010 of $25.09 an ounce and was last at $25.16, down 2.7 percent.

U.S. crude futures plunged 1.9 percent to $89.61 a barrel and Brent slipped 1.2 percent to $101.86.

Resources-reliant Australian shares <.axjo> were among the worst performers with a 1.5 percent drop, while Hong Kong shares <.hsi> shed 1.4 percent. The risk-sensitive Australian dollar was down 0.7 percent to $1.0427.

Concerns the U.S. economy may be losing momentum and could hurt global growth, compounded by the latest China data, unnerved investors, already facing a vulnerable environment with a deteriorating European economy and struggling Japanese growth.

The Nikkei stock average <.n225> slipped 1.2 percent, moving away from its highest level since July 2008 hit on Friday. <.t/>

YEN IN U.S. FOCUS

The weak U.S. data pushed the dollar lower on Friday, sending it as low as 98.08 yen. The dollar traded at 98.16 on Monday.

The yen's rise against the dollar also helped send the euro down to 128.39 yen on Monday.

Last week, the dollar touched a four-year high of 99.95 yen while the euro climbed as far as 131.10 yen, its highest since January 2010. The Australian dollar also soared to 105.43 yen, the highest since November 2007.

Daisuke Karakama, market economist at Mizuho Corporate Bank, said the dollar's drop against the yen appeared contained, despite the sluggish U.S. retail sales and consumer sentiment gauge and the Obama administration on Friday putting Japan on notice in its semi-annual report on currency practices of major trade partners, indicating underlying weakness of the yen.

The U.S. said it was watching Japan's economic policies to ensure they were not aimed at devaluing the yen to gain a competitive advantage.

"As long as the yen's weakness comes as a result of Japanese government's economic measures to beat deflation, there is little the U.S. can say, because Japan is not intervening in currency markets to weaken its currency like some other countries might do," Karakama said.

The Bank of Japan's unprecedented stimulus plan has cheered just about all global markets except Japanese government bonds, reflecting investor jitters about its effect but there is one market which has defied its magic

Aimed at beating Japan's deflation and lowering bond yields, the Bank of Japan's unprecedented stimulus plan has so far severely destabilized the Japanese government bond market, and risks turning once low-risk low-return JGBs into a high-risk low-return assets.

Other potential risks weighing on sentiment included North Korea.

North Korea prepared for the annual celebration of its founder's birth on Monday, having rejected talks with South Korea aimed at reducing tensions and reopening a industrial park shared between the two countries.

The North has threatened for weeks to attack the United States, South Korea and Japan since new U.N. sanctions were imposed in response to its latest nuclear arms test in February.
