After Sunday?s unexpected 21-17 win by the Cardinals over the Eagles, former Philly and current Arizona quarterback Kevin Kolb said that he was able to spot some of the offensive play calls, and that he yelled out what was coming to his new defensive teammates.
Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, whose ignominious career as the head coach of the Lions was highlighted by winning the toss in sudden-death overtime and choosing to kick, claims that Kolb was unable to crack any code.
?Yeah, that?s a story you know to anticipate,? Mornhinweg said Thursday, in comments circulated by the team.? ?An ex-player who is on another ballclub and he?s injured and wants so badly to be a part of a win.? In the two-minute, if I remember correctly, we only called two plays on the line.? We completed the third-down and then dropped a big one.? We anticipate those kind of things.? We do a pretty good job of self-scout[ing] and they saw very little of anything that they saw before as far as formations, motions, and shifts.?
Mornhinweg insists that there was nothing Kolb could have done to help the Cardinals.
?It?s clear on film,? Mornhinweg said.? ?Also, I think that sort of stuff is overrated.? You put yourself in that corner position and some guy on the sidelines is yelling out at you something.? You just have to trust yourself and your reads and everything.? That?s overblown a little bit, and I did go back through that.? You know where you have to be careful is where a team locks you down and doesn?t say anything.? That?s where you have to be careful with a guy that talks.? I did check that and there was absolutely no effect.?
Wait, so if the Eagles ?anticipate those kind of things,? why did Mornhinweg have to check the film?? If the Eagles took steps to ensure that Kolb couldn?t hurt them with his knowledge of the offense, there would be nothing to check.
It?s like saying that we changed the locks after the crazy co-worker was fired but then after something crazy happened we made sure that the locks had actually been changed.
Right now, ?crazy? is the best way to describe the words coming from guys like Marty Mornhinweg, Juan Castillo, and Andy Reid.
I guess that?s what happens when putting in those 22-hour workdays.
