Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer suffered within the UK, and many statistics highlight the increased numbers who suffer from such an illness. Breast cancer can occur in both men and women; however it is more common in women and about eight out of ten people diagnosed with such a cancer are over the age of fifty. Every year the survival rate of breast cancer just keeps on improving. The advances in treatment have made a huge difference in saving people???s lives. Like most things the sooner the cancer is treated the better the response and therefore the more hopeful a patient is of surviving and living a healthy life. However breast cancer is still one of the most common illnesses which can kill both men and women. Breast cancer is covered under a critical illness insurance plan and this may trigger your financial planning if someone from your family such as your mother or sister has been diagnosed with breast cancer as you are then you are more likely to suffer from such an illness. Other factors which could lead to a higher chance of suffering from breast cancer is if you are obese or anyone who takes hormone replacement tablets such as HRT. Also if you drink alcohol every day you may also have an increased risk to suffering from breast cancer.

Your breasts change throughout your life, but you need to be aware of the changes, you need to know how they normally feel to identify if they are changing shape or size. If you suspect anything then going to your GP will help to identify if further investigation is needed and upon diagnosis a consultant can then tell you whether or not a lump for example is then benign (non malignant) or cancerous (malignant). Cancer can spread throughout the body therefore it is important to identify whether the breast cancer is primary or secondary. This needs to be identified in order to establish the right treatment for the individual. There can be various side effects for some treatments of cancer but it depends on each person suffering. Breast cancer can affect people both physically and mentally and therefore there has been a variety of support groups set up to help those suffering, suffered or even for family and friends who are helping someone get through a traumatic time. Some treatments can be very invasive and may make you feel very unwell within yourself for a period of time; another side effect of some of the treatments is hair loss. If an operation is needed to remove the cancerous cells from the body then it can take time for the body to heel, radiotherapy or chemotherapy can make people feel very tired so they may need the support of others to help them get through the day. It is important a patient tries to keep their strength up with regular meals and drinking plenty of water. There is no guaranteed prevention for any illness but a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise do help to reduce those chances of suffering from breast cancer.

Critical illness insurance covers many different illness with some policies covering as few as 26 while others cover as many as 161. All insurance companies choose which critical illnesses their policies cover but if an insurance company covers cancer then generally all forms of cancer are covered including breast cancer meaning will be covered if your critical illness policy covers cancer. The original critical illness policy covered cancer, coronary artery by-pass surgery, heart attack and stroke. If your current policy doesn???t cover cancer then you can very easily change policy and find a critical illness policy which does cover cancer.
